Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry1908-16
August 1914 : headquarters and “A” Squadron based at 1 Erdigg Road in Wrexham; B” Squadron at Denbigh; “C” at Bangor; “D” at Birkenhead. Under command of the Welsh Border Mounted Brigade in the Mounted Division.
They converted to a dismounted Division in November 1915. In March 1916 they moved to Egypt as part of the 4th Dismounted Brigade. In February 1917 they formed the 24th Battalion The Royal Welsh Fusiliers and moved to France.

A Rhyl man, Charles had been a member of the Territorial Forces in 1910 and undertook exercises on Salisbury Plain. In February 1914 he emigrated to the USA, but once war was declared he returned in October 1914. He joined up as a Trooper in the Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry on 3rd April 1915. He served in Egypt, Sinai and Palestine.

Denbighshire Yeomen in 1914: This photograph was taken in 1914, at the Old Swan Inn in Abbot Street, Wrexham. It shows the regulars from that pub who were serving in Wrexham's Territorial Army Regiment, The Denbighshire (Hussars) Yeomanry, shortly before the Regiment was posted to East Anglia (Worlingham Camp, Beccles, Suffolk).

Territorial War medal named to Lt Col H P Sykes Denbigh.Yeo. Unnamed as issued, 22 June 1911 Coronation medal.

Lt Colonel H P Sykes
Was the eldest son of Thomas Hardcastle Sykes DL.JP. (who died in 1901) of Cringle House, Cheadle. Born in 1865 Harold Platt Sykes married 1st 1895 Frances McDonald of Keppoch, daughter of D P McDonald. (Who died in 1901). Secondly in 1903 to Winifred youngest daughter of Colonel W H C Wellesey Royal Fusiliers. Son and heir Lt Col Peter Thomas Wellesey Sykes. Lt Colonel Sykes served on the Staff in the South African War also with the 2nd Dragoon Guards and was Mentioned in Despatches in 1901. He was at one time seconded to the British South African Constabulary, whilst rounding up fugitive Boers. Retiring as a Captain in 1903, he later commanded the Denbighshire Yeomanry from 1910 until 1917. Later served in the Territorial Force Reserve with the rank of Lt Colonel. High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1931. He served with his regiment in Egypt from 3/3/1916, medals confirmed on the MIC cards. Retired from the TF in 1921/22.

Albert Edward Bateman was born at Bromley, Kent, in October 1865, and enlisted for the Cavalry in London on 21 July 1884. Posted to the 9th Lancers, he was appointed Lance-Corporal in August 1885, and promoted Corporal in December 1886. He was appointed Lance-Sergeant in January 1891, and promoted to Sergeant in April 1892, having extended his service to 12 years with the Colours the previous month. In February 1896 he re-engaged at Aldershot to complete 21 years’, went with the regiment to India in September 1897, and was appointed Lance Squadron Sergeant in April 1898. That October he was promoted to Squadron Sergeant Major of “A” Squadron and subsequently served throughout the Boer War under Lord Douglas Compton, with whom he was present at the capture of the Boer Commando Leader Lotter on 4/5 September 1901, when “A” Squadron played a major part. Bateman was attached as Squadron Sergeant Major to the Denbighshire Hussars (Imperial Yeomanry) from late September 1901, and in January 1905, he extended his service beyond 21 years at Chester. During the Great War the Denbighshire Yeomanry were stationed at Morpeth, Northumberland, until posted overseas to Egypt and, later Palestine and the Western Front. Bateman, however, aged 50 in 1916, was considered too old for an overseas posting and remained at home. He was finally discharged at Gobowen on 5 September 1916, having served a total of 32 years 198 days. Bateman had married at Cork in 1892 and fathered four children. His eldest son, J. S. Bateman, also served in the 9th Lancers and won the Military Medal before being commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in 1916.
