Tottenham had been a Lieutenant in the 2nd
Life Guards from May, 1884, but when a Captain he was offered
the rank of Major (suprenumary) in the Denbighshire Yeomanry. In
1854 the Government had given permission for yeomanry to be
increased and thus Tottenham took his commision as from the 1st
of June and acted as second in command. When the Commandant, Sir
William Lloyd, died in May, 1857, Tottenham according to the
London Gazette became Lieutenant-Colonel on the 12th of June. In
1874 he resigned his command of the DYC but continued as
Honorary Colonel until his death.
