Durham in 1906 the youngest of twelve sons. At the age of thirteen he became a miner but six years later he left the industry to join the Coldstream Guards, with whom he served in China from 1927-28 and in Palestine in 1936. On the outbreak of war he went to France with his unit, the 2nd Battalion, and was later part of the famous rearguard action which covered the retreat at Dunkirk. Cut off from his battalion Patterson travelled down the coast with other soldiers in a similar position, eventually making his way back to England in a stolen fishing boat. Following a fortnight's debriefing he was permitted to contact his wife, who still believed him to be "missing, presumed dead." In the latter part of the war he transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps with whom he saw service in Italy and Austria, and after the war served in North Africa with the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry. He left the army in 1947 and soon afterwards was appointed to the Yeomen of the Guard. In 1975 he entered the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and was interviewed in 1977 by the B.B.C. as part of the Silver Jubilee edition of "Songs of Praise." R Lt Patrick RADFORD MC Patrick Radford, who has died aged 84, won an MC in Italy in 1944 and subsequently had a long and successful career in business and public service. On May 16 1944, Radford, then a lieutenant, was in command of a troop of tanks of the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry which was attacking a German strongpoint near Pignatoro in the final phase of the battle for Monte Cassino. When his troop sergeant was killed by mortar fire and the tank knocked out, Radford drove his tank up to the disabled one under heavy mortar and machine-gun fire and attached a tow rope to it. He towed the tank away, thus rescuing the surviving members of the crew and preventing it falling into enemy hands. The citation for his award of the MC paid tribute to the magnificent example he had set in the North African and Italian campaigns. Patrick Vaughan Radford was born in Nottingham on November 16 1920. From Oundle he joined Stag Furniture, the family firm, before enlisting in the Royal Armoured Corps in 1941. After attending Sandhurst he was commissioned, and from 1942 to 1946 served in the Derbyshire Yeomanry in North Africa, Italy and Austria. Following demobilisation, Radford rejoined the family firm as general manager and was appointed a director in 1950. He resumed his studies and qualified as a chartered secretary in 1947 and was later called to the Bar as well. He served with Stag Furniture - as joint managing director, chairman and finally president - for 53 years. During the period of his leadership, the firm grew from a small high quality manufacturer of cabinet furniture to the largest company of its kind in Britain, and became a Plc in 1976. Radford became a director of Project Telecom in 1992, serving as company secretary and subsequently chairman. His advice and guidance played a notable part in the rapid growth of the company, leading to its flotation on the London Stock Exchange in 2003. Having stood as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Stockton-on-Tees in 1966 and 1970, he continued to work for the Conservative Party for many years. He was appointed CBE in 1983 and became a Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire in 1987. A good listener, generous and kind, but tough when necessary, Radford was a man of great integrity who observed the highest principles in all his dealings. In retirement, he was able to devote more time to fishing and gardening. Patrick Radford died on May 1. He married first, in 1945 (dissolved 1956), Nancy Shaw. He married secondly, in 1956, Evelyn Wilkinson, who survives him with a daughter by his first marriage and four sons and a step-daughter by his second. The regiment did not serve in the BEF during the Fall of France, and after Dunkirk it began training and being re-equipped before it arrived in Egypt as part of 8th Armoured Division (which never fought as a whole Division) in 1942, after a short period in Iraq. It served with distinction during at El Alamein, as part of 4th Armoured Brigade within 7th Armoured Division (the 2nd DY was the 1st Regiment to enter Tunis at the same time as 11th Hussars). It was replaced in 4th Armoured Brigade by 4th/6th South Africa Armoured Car Regiment (the renamed 4th SAACR) in early November 1942. The regiment moved to Iraq to serve in the 9th Army as an Army Unit, before returning to the UK and joining 51st (Highland) Division as its reconnaissance regiment on 20th January 1944. E. 19. Royal Armoured Corps. John was the Son of Mr. and Mrs. John James, of St. Clears, and the husband of Dilys James, of 7, Corvus Terrace, St. Clears. He enlisted prior to the outbreak of war into the 4th Battalion, the Welsh Regiment (the Carmarthenshire Territorials), and upon the outbreak of war, was transferred into the 2nd Battalion, Derbyshire Yeomanry, part of the Royal Armoured Corps. John served in North Africa with the Yeomanry, before their recall to England to train for the invasion of Europe. The Derbyshire Yeomanry landed in Normandy during D-Day, 6 June, 1944. It was, uniquely for a Yeomanry regiment, serving as a divisional Reconnaissance Regiment, attached to 51st (Highland) Division, a task normally undertaken by the regiments of the Reconnaissance Corps. After landing in Normandy, 51st (Highland) Division was moved across Pegasus Bridge to the east bank of the River Orne. There it was to strengthen the bridgehead of the 6th Airborne Division, which had been under extreme pressure since D-Day from 21 Panzer-Division and the freshly-arrived 346 Infanterie-Division. After a disastrous first battle at Breville on 10 June, the division was moved in on the southern flank of the bridgehead and into the already-notorious 'Escoville Triangle'. 'The 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry had a frustrating time, like all the Recce regiments in the British Army, in the bridgehead. Unlike the desert, there was no space to lead, roam, harass and destroy. 2 DY guarded bridges but took part in the bitter fighting for the villages of Escoville and Herouvillette, being employed mainly in an infantry role. In four days, casualties were almost 50, including the CO, Lt Col RH Palmer, but three MCs and four MMs were awarded. John was one of the fifty men of the unit to be killed during this period. He was killed in action on 16 June 1944, aged 29, and is buried at Ranville War Cemetery.
